Hanging out at the Girls' Shuffle Tourney, in Birmingham...
Between Jo’s funny shout outs to Alison, and Fuchsia spilling the beer, my eye caught Lizzy smiling with eyes glowing - the sort of glow that proud parents have, or that sort of smile that children have when they are just about to do something naughty. I left my half-spilled beer and joined Lizzy by the sideline, as she watched the polo games; smiling and glowing because this was one of the very few polo tournaments that included 25 women...
Meet Lizzy, the *only active female bike polo player in Scotland
(*update: following this post, we were told that Glasgow now has two female players: Lizzy and leftie Heather - hi to both :-) )
Name: Lizzy Sime
Occupation: English teacher/Ski instructor
City: Glasgow
Club: GHBP
Number of members: currently about 10
Where and when do you play?
We play at The Barn in the Gorbals on Sundays and at Mansfield Park in Partick on Wednesday nights
When did you start playing bike polo?
I started playing two and a half years ago but with 5 month gaps as I spent winters in the Austrian Alps. Alps in winter not great for polo…
What's the best thing about bike polo?
hmmm.. It is stupidly addictive! So much fun! But as well as that, for me, it's the people who make polo. I love my polo pals here in Glasgow and the further afield I travel to play the more amazing people I meet.
What's your best polo adventure?
The Girls' Throwin Tourney in Birmingham! I have enjoyed all the tournaments that I have played in but this one was different as it was the first all-female tournament that I have been to. One of the things I love about polo is that girls and guys play together as equals but it was amazing to see so many girls playing, and playing so well! For me, a big part of the huge success of this tournament was that the teams were thrownin every round. This meant that we all mixed and got to know each other resulting in a fantastic atmosphere, which was especially important for people like me who only knew a couple of people there.
How do you think we can encourage more girls to try out bike polo?
I don't know really. Team sport for those who maybe traditionally don't like 'team sports'! Age, gender etc doesn't matter in polo...the social side - beer is equally important as the polo... Hot girls/guys in face-cages…
What’s your advice to new players?
Stick at it and do a bit of Solo Polo practice. It seems really hard at first. I genuinely just rode in wobbly circles and didn't touch the ball for weeks! But you improve really quickly.
Would you walk 500 hundred miles and would you walk 500 more for bike polo?
Not sure I'd walk 500 miles.... but I'd definitely cycle it and more for polo...I have actually driven it. [Lizzy drove from Glasgow to Birmingham for the tournament]
Last thoughts?
i am super excited about Hell's Belles! [Hell's Belles is the biggest female european bike polo event. This year it will be in Geneva, 15-16 November 2014]

Birmingham, Bike Polo Shuffle Tourney
25 girls from 7 cities all over the UK gathered in Highgate Park, Birmingham for a one day turney.
The tournament started as a shuffle tournament, and then placed players in fixed teams with the purpose to keep teams at equal levels, for knock-out rounds (the losing team stayed out, the winning team continued). Games were ten or twelve minutes long and score draws were dealt with a golden goal to determine the winners.
I was lucky enough to be placed in a team with Jo (one of Cambridge's finest player) who was the tournament's top scorer. She had the aura of a top player: excellent ball control, smooth bike manoeuvring, strong shots at all angles; all these blended with a calm, no-need-to-show-off personality and a sweet encouraging positivity that a typically older sister has.
My other team mate, was London's Aleksandra who i have got to know the past year; she brought to the table youthful enthousiasm and spirit and some tough battles against our opponents. Our team, Destiny's Wild reached 3rd position after losing (the golden goal) and staying out from the finals. I will be honest with you; i was gutted especially because our best player had to change bikes halfway, so i was left with the thoughts of "if she had her own bike maybe the golden goal would have been hers". But in sports there are no "ifs", especially as this whole tournament had an element of fate and luck. Despite the result, it was my favourite team. (sending big-ups to Jo and Alex!)
The winning team "Rubbish with Names" (but obviously pretty good with bike polo) , indeed, deserved the win; the team which was Leah (Bristol), Sylwia (Manchester) and Ana (London) worked hard for it with good passes and a focus in a game that was played at the opponents goals the most.
i chatted with Leah (Bristol) briefly during the tournament, who admitted comptetitiveness and having only one thought: winning. Manchester's Sylwia, had a much more relaxed style, encouraging all players, radiating posisitvity and at the same time focusing in her own game. Sylwia's skills and positive nature in the polo world seemed to be also recognised from others and went on to win Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tourney.
I joked with Sylwia, as she was a playful, fun character during our trip to Birmingham via our facebook pages, and asked her "How do you feel being once again the Most Valuable Party-monster and champion of the polo queens?" her reply brought to the surface her sportspersonship:
"on a serious note.. I feel proud to have had such a great team! Ana Sanches phenomenal in the goal and on the court! Making great decisions in a split second! You got that something gir! Leah was a pure badass on the court! Tackling like a pro, not letting go for a moment! Love your spirit girl! Keep it up! Oh and that chin shot!! It was pure pleasure to play with you gals and I hope there will be more tournaments to come where I get to do so again!"
On our train journey back to London, I pretended to be interviewing Ana with an imaginary microphone and asked how she felt being a champion; Ana was slightly less chatty about the win and simply said that she felt "tired". Knowing her quite well it was obviously true that she was tired but also her answer seemed to be a way of avoiding attention, being modest and lets face it, she probably knew that i was going to quote her on this blog; she kept her reply minimal. During the games she had a focus and determination that i had never seen before in her. More inline with her usual self, she was the first to open and share the bottle of prosecco for the celebrations.
There were 25 players worth a mention:
1- Mya (bhm): strong, fast and fearless AND fierce too! A hard worker when it comes to the polo community
2- Kat (bhm): excellent hostess and the driving force of the tourney! Thanks!
3- Viki (bhm): had the most yellow stripes on her mallet, meaning pure wins during the shuffle tourney
4- Alice (bhm):another new player from Birmingham; promising and ready to take you on!
5- Irial (bhm): fresh moves, quiet and focused
6- Fuchsia (Lndn): must say she had the best goal celebrations ever
7- Nik (Lndn): one of the best players, in my opinion, and most fun person in the polo world
8- Sylwia (mcr): MVP MVP MVP!
9- Zsófia (bristol): strong player and tiredless organiser, natural coach
10- Ana (Lndn): blood in her eyes, prosecco on her lips
11- Io (Lndn): that's me; aspiring sandbagger.
12- Peixe (Lndn): all the way from Sao Paulo! que legal! Beleza!
13- Ali (Cambo): Ali is awesome! best facial expressions on achievements! experienced and talented player.
14- Jo (Cambo): Jo, such a great team mate!one of the best players!
15 - Rita (Sheffield): she can take you down; she can speed up and get you.
16 - Jackie (Lndn): fearless. She will take you down.
17- Aleks (Lndn): ball control, positioning - she is the one!
18 - Lizzy (Glasgee): strong and committed!
19- Josie (Brtn): Agile and smooth; strong shots, be warned!
20 - Maddie (Lndn): experienced player, experienced heckler
21 - Tabs (brs): another awesome player from Bristol; share the secrets!
22 - Leah (brs): she had one thing is her head; to win; and she did.
23- Violeta (Lndn): pure skill, dynamite shots.
24. Lilly (Mcr): who received just praise from Nik for stepping it up
25. Rosie: the new promising leftie
Big-ups to Phil from London, coming all the way with chilled beer to support the tourney, and ofcourse to the Birmingham boys for reffing and helping with organising.

Spin London
28th March-30th March 2014, brought us Spin, London's cycle show, which was much more exciting as this year it featured a bit of bike polo from the London Hardcourt Bike Polo Association. A tiny court was built from a small team of six or seven poloistas on Thursday afternoon, ready for the weekend for people to try out polo and players to show off their skills.

ThunderShafts: London Bike Polo League VI mission accomplished
ThunderShafts, entered the 6th London bike Polo Winter League with one focus: to manage to complete the league; no matter how many games were lost. This was our first league, and our aim was realistic.
My on-going thought during the London bike polo winter league has been fluctuating from "this is great, it's the only way to stay engaged with polo during winter" to "please, make it stop!" It has been painful at times, especially playing outdoors in zero degrees, in hard rain, following a full day's work - i guess that would have been bearable if a few games were won; or maybe if a few games were lost with a bit of a closer score. But when you are losing every game with tens of goals difference, the thought that dominates is "please, make this game stop". To add to the downside, after our first game, there was a shift from internal team enthusiasm to a crisis of falling out with a team mate, so shifts in the team had to be made. The second game was played with a sub, Maddie, and the remaining games with Julia, who has been more than amazing: great player but also gentle playing with us noobs. We couldn't have hoped for a better person joining us. So ThunderShafts became to be Ana, Julia and me, Io. (the only all-girl team).
At the beginning of the league we were predicted to come last and were shifted to division 2. Until our second to last game, the prediction stood true. We were at 8th (last) position with 6 games played, 6 games lost (0 won) and -159 goal difference.
The last game, which was the one game we were really looking forward, was our only chance to prove the prediction of finishing last, wrong and claim (7th) second to last position. The team predicted to come second to last, Winter Has Come, had much better stats, with -128 goal difference, but we wouldn't let this influence us; although a newbie and not very talented polo player, my previous experience in sports, made me think that this game was about which team was going to lose its cool and focus first. And 45 minutes (the agreed length for the league games) was a long time for both teams to get stressed, unfocused, tired. My personal tactics were to help the much better players in the team by blocking and freeing them up to do their stuff, and Julia and Ana did exactly that. The game, which was very tense, was played clean; Julia cancelled one of her own goals calling it off as a shuffle. The end result came to a win for us, with just one goal difference and with a final shot on the last second by Winter Has Come that got stuck between the cone and our goal keeper's back wheel (right in front of the goal line)! We were lucky as this concluded our last game being our first league game win. And shifting to 7th place. Whether we were the better team, i do not know as it is somewhat hard to judge, but i think we wanted this win the most, and we managed to keep focused, just a little bit longer than Winter Has Come.

Wild West Beginners' Bike Polo Tournament
12th October 2013: Wild West Beginners' Bike Polo Tournament at Westways, London: A tournament for people who have been playing polo for a year or less.
Ana, Fuschia and I formed our all-girl team "Snot Rockets" and entered having zero days of playing together. Nevertheless, with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss we entered the semi-finals, only to be knocked out by the amazing Spider Pigs (Apollo, Mathias, Hugo).
Spider Pigs went on to battle the finals against The Refugees, a team featuring the wonderful Favio of the Underdogs (yes, he did not meet the "beginners only" rule; he thought that London beginners would have a polo skill matching to his- he was totally wrong! Oops! but what a compliment!)
After a breathtaking game, Spider Pigs claimed victory scoring the golden goal.
Spider Pigs deserved the win; they played tough, they played fast and they played as a team throughout the tourney, and they wanted it bad! (you could see it in Hugo's eyes!)
Snot Rockets did quite well with 3rd place, and we are proud of our results:
Snot Rockets: 5
Team Doing Alright: 2
Snot Rockets: 3
Los Nuevos: 2
Snot Rockets: 6
Polo Loco: 0

London Open Bike Polo Tourney 2013
23rd-25th August brought us the London Open Bike Polo Tournament at Highbury Fields (north London).
Ana, Lois and I entered our all-girl-team under the name "No Horse" representing the Brazilian ladies' team under Liga Feminina de Bike Polo. We have been playing for less than a year (and never had the chance to all play/practise together) so it was not a great surprise that our results were poor. (although we should had really won those Killer Tomatoes (a team from Grantham; lovely guys by the way) and we should had reached a better performance against the Flowery tw*ts (a team from Sheffield). Despite that, i had the time of my life and loved every second of it, and i should really thank Paul K, Ben, Phil, Kev and Jess for convincing me to enter. In Kev's words "you are going to get trashed but you'll have a great time" and that was exactly our experience of our first London Open. Of course, i should thank my awesome "No Horse" team mates, Ana and Lois for being amazing, for the high-fives, the laughs, the hugs, the beer and for not getting annoyed for managing to disqualify us at the dance-off! :-). (The end party was epic too! what a great weekend)

Bike Polo Is My Boyfriend
There is one thing i regret in my life; not trying bike polo earlier.
I have been following bike polo tournaments since 2009, when i cycled down south of the river to watch the 1st Euro tournament, but only recently i gave it a go - yes 3 1/2 years later! I'm not quite sure how i found out about bike polo back then; and i am not quite sure why it took me three and a half years to give it a go. But i knew back then that i was secretely and quietly in love with it.
Bike Polo and I were courting each other in September 2012; our courting included some hurting, but i was determined to make our relationship work. We had a break from each other for 3 months, mainly due to the bad weather; i guess it was abit like a long-distant realtionship during those months. We finally got it back on, in spring 2013.
Although I suck at Bike Polo, i feel that it is my duty to tell everyone who has been considering playing bike polo to come and give it a go. Don't wait three years before you try it because this is the best thing ever. If you are in London, Beginner's sessions are on Saturday mornings at London Fields (Hackney).

Wild West Polo Tourney - London
15th September 2012: Westway Sports Centre, London

On a sunny day, you can get me to agree to anything. Even entrering a bike polo tourney. I have no trophy to prove my participation, but, i do have 3 left knee bruises, shower-resistant arm-length bike dirt and a humongous deep purple lower rib bruise which is a reminder why handlebars should be plugged (if there weren't plugged i would be now, possibly, resembling a kebab).
Our team "What Were We Thinking" sucked. We finished at a joint 14th (out of 16th). But had a blast ( a colorful purple bast) that i am sure we will remember with a smile - watch this space - we will be back. Faster, Harder, Stronger. (cos it's impossibly to be slower, softer, weaker ;) )

Congratulations to "Party Illuminati" from Newmarket, who won, "Jean-Claude God Damn" from Manchester, in second (who had an incredible 39 goals in 7 games, only letting in 4), and in joint third, "SoYoPoLoCo" from Sheffield and "We All Play Synth", from Twickenham Cycling Club! Well done, and big congratulations to the organisers and to the likes of us who dared!

East London Commonwealth Games: Bike Polo
Bike Polo was one of the main features at the East London Festival, and after enjoying the European Bike polo tournament last summer, we thought it was an opportunity to watch the amazing poloists again. The location of the tournament was great as it was hosted in the Spitalfield market which meant combining most of my favorite activities: coffee drinking, bicycles, and wandering around spitalfields/brick lane.
The day started with a short 10 minute fixie ride to Brick Lane Coffee where we lazily sat on the comfy sofa soaking up the sunshine while sipping banana frappe. At around 1:30ish, we headed down to watch a few polo matches with a mission to find one of the forum guys who was willing to trade his BLB saddle for my specialized one. The mission seemed slightly impossible when one of the fixed gear forum girls described my boy as a youngish polo guy with a beard; she smiled with that smile full of knowledge "yeah, i know most of these polo guys are bearded" My kind helper, passed my mission message to a friend of hers and slowly i created a descriptive image of the boy - and to my surprise i was able to find him and the successful trade of saddles brought my lo-pro project one step forward! success!
Back to the polo game, we saw La Schmoove, Malice, 14Co, and Zombie along with some hard shots that made the ball bounce and go off court and the ref having to run around the stalls to find it.
An unplanned highlight was our recruit into Carrom (a tabletop game) and the discovery of my unknown talent of flicking!see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrom
The Carrom scores will remain secret but here are the
Bike Polo results:
